White Spot

Founded in 1928, White Spot is an iconic BC based restaurant with 65 locations and staple for locals and visitors alike. They sought a new digital experience that brought their personality, history and story to life and provided a better functional experience for users to explore menus, order online, find locations and even apply for work. White Spot required a design system and CMS that was easy and flexible to administer and could be leveraged to create a separate site for their cousin brand Triple O’s.

Organizing the Burgers & Fries

We developed a menu system to account for over 25 menus across different regional menus, different day parts (breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner), as well as different categories, drinks and kids focussed Pirate Paks. We leaned into GA and set up heat maps to gain insight into user menu intentions so that we could optimize our menu organization and user flow.

Each menu contains a series of menu cards to dive deeper into related food – like the iconic Burgers menu and Spot Classics. Menu item cards were carefully designed to ensure that the online menu included all dietary need tags, sides and substitution details from the physical menu.

Menu Management

Coming from a rigid Drupal platform, it was important to allow the Marketing team to make their own updates to the site and menu without developer support.

Ensuring that the menus were both accurate for guests as well as easy to update for the White Spot team, we developed a custom menu management system that mitigates repeat content entry. They are able to add or to turn on and off promotional features, and update menu details with ease. This saves the team hours of redundant content entry work each month.

Location Finder

Allowing users to find their closest White Spot location for dining in or takeout was a top priority. We brought in our custom Location Finder tool powered by Google Maps to create an easy to use and manage location finder.

Each of the 65 location pages includes a link to the appropriate Menu and Order Online and Take Out link along with essential information like hours, special announcements and amenities. Customers can even search for their nearest “Drive In” (Car Hop) service location so that they can go back in time and relive the original White Spot dining experience.

Overall Brand Expression

We worked closely with the team at 123W to ensure the digital design accurately reflected their newly updated brand.

With an almost 100 year history operating in BC, White Spot has become a staple for locals and visitors alike. To ensure there was a seamless transition between restaurant assets, print advertising and the website, we worked closely with 123W to develop iconography and patterns that brought the brand personality and story to life online.

Creating a Multi-Brand Design System

We created a design system to work across both White Spot and their ‘cousin’ brand Triple O’s. The design system includes shared components with unique design tweaks to create two distinct sites.

We developed a set of core components that worked well across both brands and a few unique components to solve for specific needs. Each component was styled to match the two brands to create two distinct websites.
